St. Urho’s Day Celebration
Saturday March 19, 2011
St. Urho’s Day is celebrated primarily in North America although it is getting some traction in Finland and elsewhere. It is a “tongue-in-cheek” celebration of a fictional St. Urho, patron saint of Finnish vineyard workers, who is alleged to have driven the grasshoppers out of Finland, thus saving the grape crop. It is to be observed the day before St. Patrick’s Day, as Finns in North America found themselves many times in towns, often mining towns, with large Irish populations. As a way of spoofing and having their own celebration, they created St. Urho so they could party a day before their Irish neighbors.
Mark your calendars for the upcoming St. Urho’s Day celebration.
